Nightmare in, Nightmare out (a poem)

Breathe in

Terror seizes, blinds and holds

Breathe out

Swirling nightmare wrapped in bloody folds

Scream in

Drowning within the darkest night

Scream out

Running but never closer to that waning light

Pulled in

Fight the chains that hold you back

Pulled out

Try to run from his screaming pack

Brought in

Walking forward on stolen feet

Brought out

Time to see what you don’t want to meet

Forced in

Down into dungeons darkest, hidden door

Forced out

Hearing nasty claws rattle ‘cross the floor

See in

Through windows glossed with tears so thick

See out

Walking through stark orchard and hearts you’ll pick

Swim in

Through shivering waters filled with dancing doom

Swim out

Knowing something lurks within that deep, dark gloom

Hear in

Screams from throats and mouths you love

Hear out

Calls for help from somewhere below… or above

Walk in

Houses that blended all homes to one monster place

Walk out

Trees that look back with each a tortured face

Dragged in

Claw at the earth as hands wrap ‘round your feet

Dragged out

Beg to awaken, wrapped within a sweaty sheet

Bleed in

Hearts beat like drums against aching bone cage

Bleed out

Find out that you walked naked upon a gleaming stage

Dream in

Nightmares that hold you beneath those tilting waves

Dream out

Because you are only a sleeper and we are all helpless slaves
